The Tree of Knowledge and the First Sin – 2025
The Tree of Knowledge and the First Sin is a feminist re-interpretation of the Biblical story of the first sin, in which Eve is the one responsible for the fall of humanity by her taking a bite of an apple. This story has long frustrated me as it seems it both stems from and gives a cause and even justification for the misogyny present almost all of human societies. Transforming the origin of the sin (the apple and the snake) into an unwanted and unwelcome penis finds the first sin not in a woman eating an apple, but instead in a non-consensual penetration done by a man, shifting the responsibility and changing the story, making the tree of knowledge into a passive onlooker who knows but does nothing.
